Event recap: Thornlie January 2017
January’s Thornlie meet on the 28th continued the trend of lots of new visitors both to the venue and to WABA events overall. Our committee team were once again adorned in their red vests ready to welcome newcomers and teach some games. We also had several attendees volunteer to teach and introduce people to modern board games. Many thanks to everyone who volunteered their time.
I personally enjoyed teaching and playing a game of Clank! with Robin who normally attends our Mt Claremont meets. Clank! is a great game about sneaking into a dungeon to steal treasure from a dragon, but you’ll want to be careful how much noise you make, clank about too much and you’ll wake the dragon and face its ire.
This year we’ve introduced a door prize to the Thornlie event, something we’ve been doing at Mt Claremont for several years. Congratulations to Kent for winning this month.
It was a scorching 39C on Saturday along with some sticky afternoon humidity with the brewing storms. Over the holiday break, the centre had new air conditioning and solar panels installed which were a welcome relief. Even at peak attendance, the room was cool and crisp with no sign of the outside temperatures. I know a lot of members go a shock when they stepped outside.
Don’t forget our next event is at the Mt Claremont community centre on February 11th. We’re back at Thornlie on February 25th. A reminder that our events are on the second and fourth Saturday respectively.
Finally, a quick reminder that we’re celebrating WABAs 10th anniversary by hosting WABACon, a 2-day event spanning April 8th – 9th. Tickets are limited and going quickly but you can still grab them at the event page.
