Event recap: Thornlie November 2016

Event recap: Thornlie November 2016

November’s Thornlie event saw a great mix of exciting new games as well as old favourites. Here are some examples.

mechs-vs-minions

Mechs vs. Minions

This was a staple of our day. Ian, Tim, and I played the first and second missions, before returning for another attempt of the second mission with Leah later in the evening. We were not good mechs but we had a damn good time.

fuse

Fuse

After everyone called it a night and decided to pack up, Ian grabbed Fuse out of his bag and tempted us in with, it’s only 10 minutes, there’s a timer.

So we sat down and played a game of Fuse. Leah spectated while Ian, Tim and I came somewhat close to winning on Standard difficulty. Leah then joined us for game 2 in which we did terribly.

Determined and with sleep staved off, we went into game 3 as expert bomb defusers and cleared it with 1m 15s to spare.

I played this one with Ian at PAX as well, and while I thought it was ok it’s definitely one that has grown on me with more plays.

terraforming-mars

Terraforming Mars

Such a great game. Really enjoyed playing this one with Ian and Tim using the advanced version with unique corporations, 0 starting production and the more advanced cards.

The game continues to surprise with its resolution. In Saturday’s game we populated almost every space on Mars which we had never seen in any of our previous games.

captain-sonar

Captain Sonar

Thanks to Jason for teaching this. Awesome fun!

Game 1 & 2: Team Defiant-Tim (Captain Captain arrrh), Louise, Mike & Myself vs Jason (taking on Captain and First Mate duties), Richard & Chris. My new job…Radio Operator on a submarine…first two wins to team Defiant (Captain Captains team name reasoning…middle finger salute win or lose…)

Game 3: Tim left us, Mike took over Captaincy duties on the renamed HMS Sinky Boat(a sign of things to come…) with myself, Louise & Sharon joining the crew. Our opponents- Richard the new Captain of the opposing sub, with Jason, Chris & Nick, the greenhorn. A close one, Richard leading his crew to victory.

lords_of_waterdeep

Lords of Waterdeep

After dinner Adrian and I taught our newcomer Nadine this one. Worker placement is definitely my favourite type of game and I really enjoy waterdeep. It was a really close game with everyone ending around the 100 mark.

qwixx

Qwixx

Next up our same group of four played qwixx; a really good filler game that Tim k once taught us. It can be really funny watching the risks people take and we had a good laugh out of this one. We played twice (kinda have to with double sides score sheets :-P)

bohnanza

Bohnanza

Lovvve Bohnanza! Fun mix of set collection, bargaining and trading. Nadine and I tied first but it was a really close game. We all needed a third bean field quite early on but it was difficult even with that.
