Event Recap – D-Con 2016!

Event Recap – D-Con 2016!

On the 10th of December WABA held it’s annual final event of the year: D-Con! This was a 12 hour event, spread over three rooms. We gave away some great games, organised some fantastic tournaments, and played a LOT of games.

One of the three rooms full of gamers.

You can find an extensive list of just some of the games played by our members and visitors on our boardgamegeek guild here.

Just a portion of the games that were displayed for sale or trade

Below are some highlights from a few of the many organised play events that were run on the day.

Nobody but Us Chickens

Nobody But Us Chickens is a fast-paced, simultaneous action selection card game where players earn points by capturing chickens with their predators (foxes and rats) or protecting chickens with their guard dog. The game is easy to learn, but exciting and unpredictable.

Last year the players choose their own table to play at but this time the tables were randomised . The games were played over six nights (rounds)

The top two scorers in each game went into the six player final.

Final Scores
70 Shaun (with his equal highest score of the tournament of 25 on the first night)
52 Kent (with his equal highest score of the tournament of 23 on the last night)
45 Amelia
37 Amy
36 Oliver
32 Richard

Shaun took home the winner’s prize: A copy of Fox & Chicken.

Formula D

Formula D is a high stakes Formula One type racing game where the players race simulated cars with the hope of crossing the finish line first.

Overview

  • The tournament consisted of three one lap races with only the qualifiers from the previous race going through to the next race.
  • All cars had the same set up.
  • For simplicity and timeliness – collision, damage and road handling, slipstreaming and pit stops did not apply. No optional rules applied.
  • Braking, overshooting and motor damage did apply but were applied differently.
  • Drivers had a modified driver board. That is what made the tournament unique.
  • The driver board was overlaid with a tournament template. A colour coded line extended for each gear with a peg in the fourth hole of each of the rows (six rows, one for each gear).

Local publisher Freod Games brought along their range of family-style card games for attendees to enjoy, and ran a great event that saw players rotate through their games.

The lucky winners got to take home a selection of Freod’s games.

Dice Decathlon

A staple of WABA’s D-Con, the Dice Decathlon table ran throughout the day!

Smash Up!

Twelve contestants entered this tournament, split over four tables. The winers of each progressed to the final game.

Caroline chose to play with Princesses and Sharks, discarding Time Travellers.
